Almost every Phoenix project eventually runs into caliche, the cemented layer of calcium carbonate that sits below the surface across much of the Valley. It is hard enough to stop a shovel and it blocks drainage, which is why planting holes dug into it fill with water and drown whatever went in them. Once it is broken through, backfilling with premium screened topsoil gives roots something to grow into rather than returning the same sterile material to the hole.

Above ground, the work splits between surfaces and drainage. Paths, side yards, and the compacted areas under ramadas and sheds want a fine crushed material such as 1/4" minus base gravel that packs into something firm underfoot instead of shifting with every step. Front-yard rock beds and the areas where monsoon runoff concentrates are a different problem, and a washed aggregate like 3/4" clean gravel holds its position and its color better than fine material that washes into the street in the first heavy storm. We deliver to homes, HOA properties, and commercial sites throughout the city.

Answers to Your Frequently Asked Questions

I hit a rock-hard layer digging a planting hole. What is it?
Almost certainly caliche, a cemented calcium carbonate layer common under Valley soil. It has to be broken through rather than dug, and the hole needs a drainage path out of it, because caliche holds water like a bucket. Backfilling with screened soil rather than the excavated material gives new plants a fighting chance.
Fine material on any kind of slope will move, and a single storm can undo a whole yard. Larger washed stone stays put far better, and defined edging plus adequate depth matters as much as the size you choose. Where runoff concentrates along a driveway or a side yard, size the material up rather than down.
Two inches is the usual minimum for coverage, and three suppresses weeds noticeably better while hiding the ground beneath more completely. Depth drives volume directly, so decide it before running your square footage through the material calculator on our site rather than estimating from area alone.
It helps at first and it is standard practice, but it is not permanent. Windblown dust and organic debris build a thin soil layer on top of the fabric over a few years, and weeds eventually germinate in that rather than coming up from below. Fabric plus adequate rock depth works better than either on its own.
Room for a full-size dump truck to get in and turn, overhead clearance under trees and lines, and firm ground that will carry the truck fully loaded. Block walls, narrow gates, and tight cul-de-sacs are the usual constraints in Valley neighborhoods. Describe the approach when you order so dispatch can plan the placement.
