Overview

What is Pea Gravel?

Pea gravel is small, naturally rounded stone, usually around 1/4″ to 3/8″, shaped by water over time. Its smooth surface makes it comfortable to walk on and safe around kids and pets.

Because the stones are round, they roll rather than lock together. That gives pea gravel its relaxed, natural look, but it also means it needs edging and is not suited to load-bearing jobs like driveway bases.

FAQ

Pea Gravel questions

Quick answers to what customers ask most.

Is pea gravel good for a driveway?

Not as the main material. The round stones shift under tires and do not compact. If you want the look, use a thin top layer over a compacted base with strong edging.

How much area does a ton of pea gravel cover?

At 2″ deep, one ton covers roughly 115 sq ft. Use the calculator above for your exact area and depth.

Do weeds grow through pea gravel?

Some will. Landscape fabric under the gravel and a depth of at least 2″ keep weeds to a minimum.

Is pea gravel safe for dogs and kids?

Its smooth, rounded shape makes it a common choice for dog runs and play areas. Supervise small children, since the stones are small.
