Miami sits directly on oolitic limestone, a porous rock formation that keeps the water table close to the surface almost everywhere in the county. That changes how drainage work has to be approached, since a standard drainage trench can hit water within a few feet of digging. Open-graded 3/4" clean gravel is the usual choice for the trenches and swales that do get built, giving whatever water is present a route to move rather than sit.

South Florida’s rainy season brings intense, concentrated storms, and yards need to shed that volume of water quickly rather than absorbing it, since the limestone underneath is often already saturated. Decorative gravel beds finished with pea gravel drain far better than turf during those storms, which is part of why low-water, gravel-based landscaping has become increasingly common across the county.
