Read moreMuch of Redan was built out in the 1980s and 90s, when graders stripped the topsoil, so many lawns still struggle in thin clay. Spreading premium screened topsoil before reseeding gives grass a real root zone. Owners off Redan Road and Panola Road often tackle bare patches in early fall.
On sloped lots, a perforated pipe bedded in #67 crushed stone catches runoff before it reaches the basement wall. Families with young kids often add sandboxes filled with soft, washed playground sand. Redan is unincorporated, so DeKalb County sets the rules for grading work. The nearby Arabia Mountain and Stone Mountain areas have granite close to the surface in places. Many families have lived in Redan for decades, and yards often include vegetable gardens, fruit trees and play areas for grandchildren. Older lots also have large pines and oaks that shade parts of the yard. Panola Mountain State Park and the Arabia Mountain trail are close by, giving the area a wooded, rocky feel. Spring and fall are the best seasons for lawn and garden work. Many also keep raised beds for vegetables near the back door.
